Left alone, buildup does more than dull the shine — a film of lotion, soap and skin oil around a setting can hide a chip or a loosening prong that would otherwise be caught early, and deep surface scratches only get deeper with continued wear. It's also why we don't treat every piece the same in the cleaning room: an ultrasonic bath is fast and effective on solid gold and diamonds, but the same vibration and heat can crack or cloud porous or heat-sensitive stones like opals, emeralds, pearls and turquoise, so those are cleaned by hand instead. A wedding band worn every day for a decade needs a different amount of work than a brooch that's sat in a drawer growing tarnish in its detail — either way, the piece is assessed before anything touches it.

Rhodium plating is the bright white finish on white gold. It wears off over time and turns slightly yellow; re-plating restores the bright white look and adds protection. It's recommended for white gold, not for yellow gold or platinum.
